The External Registration Program at the Institute provides opportunities to (1) individuals employed in ane='mso-spacerun:yes'> R & D environment in scientific institutions or industries and (2) the faculty members of all Engineering, Agricultural, Pharmaceutical, Veterinary, Medical Colleges,/Universities recognized by appropriate government agencies to pursue research degrees in Science / Engineering Faculties. Registration under this program is now open in the following Departments for the Session 2011.

REQUIREMENTS
In addition to possessing the academic
qualifications mentioned in the respective departments/centres/
units, an applicant should fulfill the following requirements also:
1. Professional Experience
Should have completed minimum two years of continuous service in a permanent position as on 1st April 2011 in the current
organization.
2.
Organization/Institution
Organisation/Institution must have atleast 5 years of its existence for sponsoring candidates
to ERP program. Only persons engaged in R & D work in Technical /
Scientific Institutions/ Industries or R & D Establishments are eligible. The Organization should have adequate facilities for carrying out
research.
3.
Age
Should not have completed 40 years of age as on 1st
April 2011.
4. Sponsorship
Unconditional sponsorship
by the employer is essential. This
sponsorship should be complete in all respects as per the Institute
requirements and should be obtained at the time of submitting the application
itself. In the absence of this, the
application will be rejected.
5.1. Joint Research Supervisor (for candidates from R&D
Organization/Industries)
The
applicant should identify a Joint Research Supervisor from the sponsoring
organization (who must be a permanent staff member) who satisfies the following
requirements of the Institute and is willing to supervise the research work of
the candidate as a supervisor.
·
The Joint Research Supervisor should be
from the same establishment/laboratory and place in which the candidate is
employed. The Joint Research Supervisor
once identified should not change his place of work during the period of
registration of the candidate. Guidance
by making periodic visits to the organization is not permitted.
·
The Joint Research Supervisor from the
organization should be a Ph.D.holder
·
It may be ensured that the Joint
Research Supervisor from the Organisation has enough
service in the Organisation and he/she will not
attain superannuation within 5 years.
5.2. Research Supervisor (for the faculty members from
Educational Institutions)
The
applicant should identify a Joint Research Supervisor or Coordinator from the
educational institution (who must be a permanent staff member) who satisfies
the following requirements of the Institute and is willing to supervise the
research work of the candidate as a supervisor.
The
Joint Research Supervisor or Coordinator should be from the same
establishment/laboratory and place in which the candidate is employed. The Joint Research Supervisor or Coordinator
once identified should not change his place of work during the period of
registration of the candidate. Guidance

6. On
Admission
·
Candidates admitted to the program must
continue to remain in the same organization and place of work until the
research work is completed. If the
candidate is transferred or joins a new organization before the submission of
the thesis, his/her registration shall be cancelled.
·
Candidates shall invariably obtain
prior permission from the Institute before they go abroad as part of their
work.
·
The candidate is required to spend a
minimum of one term or two terms of continuous residence at the Institute right
after admission. Otherwise, the registration is liable to be cancelled. The
courses to be taken by the candidate during the residential period will be finalised by the Research Supervisor from the Institute as
per the academic requirements in force.
8.
Progress Report
The
candidate should submit a report of progress of work done through the research
supervisors from IISc and the organisation at the end
of every 6 months.
The completed application (in
duplicate) should reach the Deputy
Registrar (Academic), Admissions Unit, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore
560012 on or before March 21, 2011 and
the last date for the receipt of
applications cannot be extended for any reason.
Selection
Procedure
The short-listed eligible candidates
will be called for an interview between 6 and 10th June 2011. The final selection is based on the performance of
the candidate in the interview.
Candidates will be short-listed based
on their performance in the qualifying examination including GATE/ CSIR-UGC NET
for JRF/UGC NET for JRF/ DBT JRF/ICMR JRF/ IISc Entrance Test/ JEST/ NBHM or
any other National Entrance Test.

Bachelor’s degree holders in Physics/

by UPSC/AICTE as being equivalent for Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.

Holders of MBA or its equivalent
subsequent to BE/B Tech, for admission to the department of Management Studies

Additional notes
1. The minimum requirement for admission to the research programme is a SECOND CLASS (as declared by the University) in the qualifying examination as indicated against each department. See Sections 1.3 and 1.4 for more details.
2.
Candidates with B Sc followed by a professional
Diploma, should have studied their B.Sc in the 10+2+3
system and obtained at least a SECOND CLASS.
3.
Wherever
Bachelor’s degree is prescribed as the minimum eligible qualification for
admission, the duration of the such degree courses
should be atleast 4 years and wherever Master’s
degree is prescribed the minimum duration should be 2 years.
4. The Master of Computer Science/Application holders should have studied B.Sc. with any of the following as major subjects: (i) Physics (ii) Chemistry (iii) Mathematics (iv) Electronics (v) Computer Science.
5.
The minimum requirement of SECOND CLASS in
the qualifying examination is relaxed to PASS CLASS for SC/ST candidates.
6. Some departments have specific requirements of subjects at the Bachelor’s or 10+2 levels as indicated in Sections 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5. Candidates have to ensure that they meet these requirements.
7.
Those in the final year of their qualifying
degree and awaiting results may also apply. However, they should have completed
all the requirements for the award of their qualifying degree, including all
examinations, dissertation projects, viva-voce, etc., by the time of joining,
i.e., by the end of July 2011.
